Yeti Roof Rails: Black To Silver

I want to change the roof rails on my Yeti from Black to Silver.

But this way?

This is to compliment my 'Outdoor' sill covers and my front bumper decorative strips

What are my options?

• locate new or good secondhand silver rails
• remove my black rails and spray them silver
• spray my rails while still on my Yeti – tons of masking required
• sand the black off of my rails

I’m sanding them down.
Let’s get started.

I need to start by getting the end caps off...

I'm going to take 40 grit sandpaper, and water, and just sand the rail.

I really have no idea how hard or how easily the black will come off.

I have never seen this done before, not even on YouTube 😟

These roof rails are aluminium, by the way.

I know an electric sander or drill attachments will do the job faster but I don’t have those.

And everybody loves their Yeti, so who cares how long something takes, right?

About an hour and 15 minutes later and the first rail is ready for the second stage.

I must start sanding with finer paper to remove the scratches caused by that 40 grit.

Third step is to break out the Autosol

I am definitely not wanting a mirror finish (which Autosol is capable of producing here), just a light shine and lasting protection.
I won’t press too hard and I won’t spend too long on the same area.

The fourth and final step is to use my Corrosion Block waterproof grease. I use this a lot in all sorts of places around my Yeti.

It isn't sticky so should not attract anything to stick to it.

As a finishing step I'll just clean up a few areas with WD-40 and then apply a little Corrosion Block waterproof grease

BOOM!

The inside of the rails I will leave black. This will add to the uniqueness I am striving for with my Yeti. 

Plus it looks kind of cool, too.
